The difference, by ear

Nu metal is the commercial wing that grew out of this, with hip-hop rhythm, turntables and lower tunings. Alternative metal keeps solos, conventional song structure and a much wider palette.

Both are part sung, part screamed and move at much the same pace, around 80 to 140 bpm. To hear the difference, play Faith No More next to Korn. Both grew out of heavy metal, alternative metal first and nu metal six years after.

Put together from each genre's vocals, tempo, song length, key acts and place in the tree.
