The difference, by ear
Britpop is what happened when several indie bands got major-label budgets and started writing for a mass audience. Same scene, different ambition.
Both are sung cleanly and move at much the same pace, around 100 to 150 bpm. To hear the difference, play Oasis next to Pavement. Both grew out of alternative rock, indie rock first and Britpop eight years after. United Kingdom appears in the origins of both.
