The difference, by ear
Folk metal is broadly cheerful and uses living dance music. Celtic metal is solemn, slower and more concerned with history and loss.
Both are part sung, part screamed and move at much the same pace, around 120 to 180 bpm. To hear the difference, play Cruachan next to Skyclad. Celtic metal grew out of folk metal, a year later.
