The difference, by ear
Grindcore takes these vocals, doubles the speed and throws out the arrangement. A grind song is over in ninety seconds; a death metal song has movements.
Both are growled or screamed, but grindcore is much faster: 200 to 320 bpm against 120 to 260. Songs run longer in death metal: usually 3½ to 6 minutes, against under a minute to 1½ minutes in grindcore. To hear the difference, play Death next to Napalm Death. Both grew out of heavy metal in the same year.
