The difference, by ear
Post-rock uses the same architecture with clean guitars and no scream. Same form, different materials.
Post-rock is mostly instrumental where post-metal / atmospheric sludge is part sung, part screamed, at much the same pace, around 60 to 140 bpm. To hear the difference, play Neurosis next to Slint. Post-metal / atmospheric sludge comes from the metal side of the tree and post-rock from the rock side, and post-rock came first, by six years.
