The difference, by ear
Space rock takes the drone and the repetition and drops the whimsy - one chord for twenty minutes, pointed outward rather than inward.
Both are sung cleanly, but space rock keeps to a narrower band: 90 to 130 bpm against 70 to 140. Songs run longer in space rock: usually 6 to 20 minutes, against 3 to 10 minutes in psychedelic rock. To hear the difference, play Pink Floyd next to Hawkwind. Space rock grew out of psychedelic rock, three years later.

How it sounds
- Studio effects: phasing, reversed tape, tape echo, extreme panning.
