The scene

Gothenburg's idea left Sweden and landed here. Killswitch Engage put melodic death metal's harmonised leads under a hardcore band and a sung chorus, and for most of a decade that arrangement was what the word metalcore meant in America. Converge, from the same small state and the same halls, spent those years proving the opposite case — that hardcore could get more violent and more musically difficult at once — and Kurt Ballou recorded half the scene at GodCity while doing it. The two bands sound nothing alike and could not have happened anywhere else.
