Each corner is a ten-point rating. The further out, the higher.

The difference, by ear

Symphonic metal takes the same female-voice arrangement and adds an orchestra and much greater speed and grandeur. Gothic metal stays slow and sad.

Symphonic metal is sung cleanly where gothic metal is part sung, part screamed, and faster: 110 to 160 bpm against 70 to 110. To hear the difference, play Paradise Lost next to Nightwish. They share a root in heavy metal, and gothic metal came first, by five years.

Put together from each genre's vocals, tempo, song length, key acts and place in the tree.
